Surface contamination is reduced with LipoCoat’s contact lens coating because deposits and bacterial build-up are reduced on the lens material. LipoCoat developed contact lens coatings that can be adapted for use on rigid gas permeable contact lenses, soft contact lenses and can be provided as an additive to lens care solutions.

Contact lens coating / Coating contact lenses

Contact lenses are commonly used medical devices to manage refractive errors. It is estimated that approximately 150 million people wear contact lenses worldwide. Several complications are associated with wearing contact lenses such as discomfort, eye infections, dry eyes and corneal neovascularization. Contact lens coatings have become a popular method to combat these complications. LipoCoat’s contact lens coatings are aimed at improving comfort and safety properties of the contact lens materials. By coating contact lenses, the surface wetting is increased as well as the surface lubricity. Surface contamination is also reduced with LipoCoat’s contact lens coating because deposits and bacterial build-up are reduced on the lens material. We develop contact lens coatings that can be adapted for use on rigid gas permeable contact lenses, soft contact lenses and can be provided as an additive to lens care solutions.

LipoCoat is a spin-off company of the MESA+ Institute of the University of Twente in Netherlands, founded in 2016. We developed a family of unique lipid-based coatings, mimicking the physiological lipid-bilayer membrane of our body cells which prevent the attachment of any kind of potential pathogens. The coating helps to reduce the need for using antibiotics, there are no side effects since all components we use are either components that which are already present in our own body by nature or used in the food industry for decades. The production process of LipoCoat’s coatings is rapid and efficient using LipoCoat’s Fast Amphiphile Solution Transfer (FAST) technology. LipoCoat is adaptable to many uses due to its ‘toolbox’ technology. With a range of formulations, its hydrophilicity, stability and lubricity can be adjusted to complement the inherent anti-biofouling and anti-thrombogenic nature of the coating. An additional asset of LipoCoat, due to its dynamic, fluid nature is the ability to self-repair should scratches expose the medical device to the biological environment.
